Bath in Bloom

Bath is surely one of Britain’s most beautiful cities – a compact and characterful place filled with elegant, historic buildings and lush green spaces. We’re spoilt for choice with public parks, from the pretty riverside Parade Gardens, with their old-fashioned bandstand and glorious floral displays, to the cool green shade and secret winding paths of the Great Dell. But of course, as we at Hidden Gardens know, Bath is also home to hundreds of smaller gardens, public and private, that help to make the city a gorgeous green space – and whether you’ve got a lavish garden or simply a stunning window-box, we’d like to urge you to celebrate your city and play your part in making it beautiful, by entering the Bath in Bloom Competition this year.

The competition really is open to absolutely everyone in Bath and North East Somerset, and you don’t have to be a horticultural expert or have a future Chelsea Flower Show winner on your hands, so don’t be afraid to get involved. Judging is based on originality and design, use of colour and variety of plants, and of course condition, care and sustainability – so as long as you’ve got a knack for growing something and a little space to show it off, there’ll be a category for you.

Of course, living in a city means that not everyone has a garden to call their own, but every little bit of colour and greenery helps to make Bath beautiful. Those who are limited on space should take a look at the category for container planting and hanging baskets, the small garden category or the category for patios and courtyards (no lawn required!), or do bear in mind that there’s a category for allotments and kitchen gardens too. Meanwhile, if you’re part of a lovely gardening community, why not enter the group categories? There’s one for horticultural achievements by a group and one for environmentally-friendly gardens created by groups too. Gardening can be a wonderful way to bring people together and deserves to be celebrated! And of course, Bath’s businesses are very much encouraged to get involved too, with several business categories for everything from container planting to pub floral displays.

Entry is free – all you have to do is download the entry form from their website, which also has all the information you need about the different categories available to enter. You can only pick one, so choose carefully, and be sure to get your entry in by the closing date on the 31st of May. Well done to everyone who gets involved and remember, whether you’ve got lush lawns, a perfect patio or simply a few handsome hanging baskets, you can play a key part in making our city special!
